Californication Trailer

In 2009 Fall Season, Californication, Showtime on 09/21/2009 at 3:55 pm

There’s really not much left to say about Showtime’s Californication.  It’s dirty and raunchy, even by pay cable standards.  It’s hilarious.  It’s absurd.  It’s snarky.  We’ll let this new promotional trailer speak for itself.

Californication returns to Showtime at 10pm Sunday September 27th.

Gossip Girl: Sexperimentation

Gossip Girl

Do you know what a Geor-gina is?  Well, watch and learn.  Here’s a new Gossip Girl trailer from The CW.  The trailer gives us a quick look at Hilary Duff’s guest appearance and what dorm life holds for the incoming NYU class:

Gossip Girl airs each Monday at 9pm on The CW.

House Returns!

In 2009 Fall Season, Fox, House on 09/21/2009 at 2:55 pm

The doctor returns!  Hopefully you’re ready for a near overload of snark and bitter humor because tonight marks the return of House with a two hour season premiere.  Here’s a quick little round up of House related posts we’ve done lately.  There’s been a few:

First off, there were all those cast photos.  While the gray background is a little less than interesting, the raining pills shot of House is kinda cool.  After those promotional photos came the promotional trailers.  While all three of them had their attributes, the second gave us our first look at Andre Braugher’s guest appearance.

That initial little promotional push was followed up Snakes On A Cane, a witty little campaign from the mind of Hugh Laurie.  Part one featured the launch of and a glitzy-creepy poster, that we hoped was digital cgi effects.  We later learned, though, that it featured real snakes.

Finally, there was the Alpha Male promotional trailer just last week.  For some reason, though, Hulu and Fox made that a limited-time only sort of thing, so while our post shall last forever, there’s not much to see anymore.

House returns tonight, Monday September 21st at 8pm, with a two hour sixth season premiere on Fox.

Glee: Showmance Recap

In 2009 Fall Season, Fox, Glee on 09/19/2009 at 3:08 pm

Review by Michelle Ann

We start with school day with Will’s (Matthew Morrison) arrival; he touches base with all the glee members as he heads to work for the day.  He runs into Emma (Jayma Mays) and they once again share an awkward moment before Quinn (Dianna Agron) lets Will know that Coach Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) is waiting for him, and she hates to be kept waiting.

A highlight of every episode is the confrontation of Sue and Will. Today, Sue starts early giving Will iron pills so he can keep up his strength when he is menstruating. They trade barbs while letting us all know 12 members are needed to qualify as a show choir. Sue suggests that with only 5 ½ (the half being wheelchair-bound Artie Abrams (Kevin McHale)). Sue suggests that Will needs to start looking at the special needs classes for additional members.  Will defends his group and has the confidence they will be okay without any help from Sue.

Quinn really wants Finn (Cory Monteith) to quit the choir. She even offers him a touch of her breast; of course that is only undershirt/over bra. Rachel (Lea Michele) overhears the exchange and thinks she is winning the battle, since he is staying in choir and losing the chance to feel up his girlfriend.

The group is working on a new routine, one that is a bit out of touch and like last week’s. Will reassured them that his group took regionals with this song in 1993.  They sing ‘La Freak” with a lack of enthusiasm and even though it is obvious this is not working, Will insists that they will be fine. The rest of the group begins to fear for their general safety.

Terri (Jessalyn Gilsig) drags Will out house hunting in her sister Kendra’s (Jennifer Aspen) neighborhood. There is a new subdivision opening up. Of course the basic house is hard enough to afford, but with most everything al la carte (grand foyer and sun nook), Will sees no way they can afford any of this, especially on his salary.

Will walks into Glee Club and offers up a compromise in the form of ‘Gold Digger’ by Kanye West. Will suggests that Finn take the lead and he declines, fearing he is still working on the whole walking and singing thing. Will proceeds to school the group. This is by far my favorite number of the episode. I had downloaded the free video off iTunes earlier in the week and even though I had seen it at least 10 times, it still was great to see how it fit into the show. Will tells the group that they don’t have time to get this number ready for the assembly to recruit members. The group is still are not keen on the disco.

Emma heads to the restroom to clean up. She overhears someone throwing up and it is our damsel, Rachel.  She feels like a failure at this whole bulimia thing since she has no gag reflex, Emma tells her that will be a good thing when she gets older. Into the guidance counselor’s office to talk about her crush on Finn.  Of course Emma tells her that she can’t relate to the whole unrequited crush thing and as we cut to her crying in her car to “All By My Self”, Emma suggests that Rachel find things in common to get Finn to notice her.

Crash Returns Tonight!

In 2009 Fall Season, Crash, Starz, The Mod Squad, Twin Peaks on 09/18/2009 at 1:59 pm

“Nothing is random.  There are no accidents”.  And a second season of Crash begins on Starz.  The season begins with the return of eccentric former music mogul Ben Cendars (Dennis Hopper) from a full year in rehab.  He seems to be the best of the bunch as much of last season’s cast do not seem to be faring too well: former cop Kenny Battaglia (Ross McCall) is now a strip mall security guard facing a bitter divorce, Inez, the gypsy jezebel, has taken a step ahead…from lap dancing to host of an exclusive gentleman’s club.

Eric Roberts

While the old guard is still surviving throughout L.A., a new host of characters have arrived, as well, mainly encircling Seth Blanchard (Eric Roberts), one of the richest men in the country, who has a life changing experience that, this being Crash, will connect in seen and unseen ways to the rest of the cast.  One character seemingly unconnected to Seth, though, is Suzy Fields, Ben Cendars flower-child former wife, played by Peggy Lipton of The Mod Squad and Twin Peaks fame.  She’s signed on to play the part for a multi-episode arc and we can only imagine the relationship between Ben and an ex-wife…who’s now married to his former close friend, 60’s hero-author Owen Fields (Keith Carradine).

The series, based on Paul Haggis’ much ballyhooed 2004 film, is the first in a line of scripted series rolled out by Starz in the last year.  I have to admit that the series, with its flashy L.A. palm-tree lined lifestyles juxtaposed with noir-grit and broken/breaking lives, is a rather ambitious project for a first time outing, but they’ve handled it well.

Dennis Hopper

The second season of Crash begins tonight, Friday September 18th at 10pm on Starz.

Brothers Preview

In 2009 Fall Season, 2009 Pilots, Brothers, Comedy, Fox on 09/18/2009 at 10:55 am

Up to this point we have yet to talk about Fox’s upcoming comedy Brothers on DVR Life.  It features CCH Pounder, which would have normally steered us towards it, but the first promotional trailer we said portrayed just a middling attempt at a sitcom.  We’re not saying it was bad; just not worth our time.

Here, though, we’ve come across another trailer which actually gave the show a sweet, family-like glow with a bit of biting humor.  Like a good trailer should, it made us wonder if we should give the show a try after all.  Let us know what you think:

Brothers airs on Friday, September 25th at 8pm with a one hour series premiere on Fox.

Law & Order: SVU Sneak Peeks

In 2009 Fall Season, Law and Order SVU, NBC on 09/18/2009 at 9:45 am

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit

We have two new sneak peeks at the season premiere of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. The first clip gives us more of a look at Wentworth Miller’s bad-boy attitude than the first trailer we posted a bit ago and also gives us a bit of the storyline and a peek at how race is going to factor  into the episode.  Clip two is our first look at Christine Lahti starring as the new “Executive ADA”, who’s got one hell of an attitude herself!

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit returns to NBC for its eleventh season next Wednesday, September 23rd at 9pm.

18 Minute Clip of Flash Forward

In 2009 Fall Season, 2009 Pilots, ABC, Flash Forward, Grey's Anatomy on 09/17/2009 at 6:27 pm

If you haven’t heard, someone leaked a really poor quality torrent of ABC’s upcoming Flash Forward earlier this week.  The network, trying to drum up some buzz for the series, offered their Inner Circle members a chance to stream the pilot on Sunday evening and some enterprising geek decided to share.  I’ve also heard rumors there’s a Russian overdub out there somewhere, too.

Not sure if this is a calculated move to battle those low quality torrents or not, but ABC has decided to post the first (approximately) 18 minutes of the series premiere.  As we said about the 5 minute Grey’s Anatomy peek ABC doled out yesterday, we’re not interested.  DVR Life will just hold out til the show actually premieres.  It’s exactly one week from tonight and we’re pretty sure we’ll manage to get by.  We’re really starting to miss the good old days when you had no idea what was going to happen until a show finally aired *sigh*.

We  thought some of you might wanna check it out, though, so here ya go:

Flash Forward premieres Thursday, September 24th at 8pm on ABC.

Sissy Spacek Joins Big Love

In 2010 Winter Schedule, Big Love, Casting, HBO on 09/17/2009 at 4:37 pm

Sissy Spacek

The LA Times Show Tracker blog broke the news yesterday morning that Sissy Spacek is planning to join the cast of HBO’s poly-affair Big Love.  When we first heard she would be joining the series for multiple episodes of the fourth season, we immediately jumped to the image of her on the compound in frumpy-frock fashion and secretly hating life as a sister-wife…The fit seemed kinda perfect.

Then we realized she’s actually slated to star as a political lobbyist!  Silly us for type casting such a fine actress.  Just because she shined as a coal miner’s daughters doesn’t mean she should be automatically relegated to the compound, right?  I mean, with a half a dozen Academy Award nominations, she probably knows how to handle herself in any role.

Big Love is slated to return for it’s fourth season in January 2010 on HBO.

Sneak Peek: Law & Order

In 2009 Fall Season, Law and Order, Law and Order SVU, Law and Order: Criminal Intent, NBC on 09/17/2009 at 3:15 pm

Law & Order

Oh man are we excited!  DVR Life has been a die-hard Law & Order fan since our wee middle school days.  Not sure why the show mesmerized our 11 year old minds, but it did.  Here we are now, 18 years later and still fans!  That’s right!  With Law & Order returning for it’s 20th season, we can’t claim to have been there since the beginning, but not many folks out there can.

While we have been there since the beginning for both Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Law & Order: Criminal Intent, we have always enjoyed the original just a smidge more.  There’s nothing else quite like the real Law & Order for us, so we’re stoked to check out the first murder of the new season.  We’re also pretty glad we don’t have to wait all the way until January for a new season like we did last year.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Law & Order returns for it’s twentieth season on Friday, September 25th at 8pm.

Fringe Returns Tonight!

In 2009 Fall Season, Fox, Fringe on 09/17/2009 at 3:15 pm

With all the hoopla and excitement over the return and premieres of the NBC comedies this evening, we didn’t want you to think we forgot our mind-bending friends at Fringe.  The series returns this evening for it’s second season and we couldn’t be more excited.  What we’re also excited about is this new promotional trailer that’s been buzzing around the internet.  Not only are we excited because it’s about Fringe, but also because it’s a witty idea and those are tough to come by in the realm of TV advertising these days!

Fringe returns for it’s sophomore season tonight, Thursday September 17th at 9pm on Fox.

Weekend Update Bloopers

In 2009 Fall Season, Comedy, Saturday Night Live, SNL Weekend Update Thurs Edition on 09/17/2009 at 2:55 pm

Weekend Update desk

With SNL Weekend Update Thursday Edition premiering for a short run this evening, we thought we’d share this little blooper reel.  The bloopers are taken from dress rehearsals and feature Seth Myers and Amy Poehler, both of whom will be on the show tonight.  We’re keeping our fingers crossed for some Poehler rapping.

Law & Order: Criminal Intent Renewal & Casting

In 2010 Spring Schedule, Law and Order: Criminal Intent, USA on 09/17/2009 at 2:20 pm

Law & Order: CI

There’s been a few bits of news floating around the last couple of days about Law & Order: Criminal Intent.  First off, the series has been renewed by it’s adoptive home, USA, for a ninth season.  The official L&O: CI twitter acct posted this:

No surprise there as USA, like many cable networks, like to stretch their original series out.  Most premiere half the season in late spring or summer, then again in January or so.  It tends to be a bummer when the short season ends, but it’s nice knowing that, instead of having to wait a full year, like some shows, there’s more coming in just a few months.

Other than the renewal, the other news floating aroung, which has yet to be confirmed, is about casting.  Unconfirmed reports from Ausiello are that Julianne Nicholson, who ended last season with a birth, will not be returning post-partum.  Instead, the rumor mill has pegged My Own Worst Enemy‘s Saffron Burrows as a possible partner for Jeff Goldblum.

We admit to being a bit sad by this news.  Nicholson was a great addition to the cast, especially when paired up with Goldblum.  Ausiello also reports that Vincent D’Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe are in talks to return for the next season.  Regarding all these rumors, the L&O: CI twitter account only had one thing to say:

Law & Order: Criminal Intent is tentatively set to return in March 2010 on USA.

Hillary Duff On Gossip Girl

In 2009 Fall Season, Gossip Girl, The CW on 09/17/2009 at 1:45 pm

Gossip Girl

The CW twittered another first look photo today, this one featuring Hilary Duff on Gossip Girl.  Duff’s character, Olivia Burke, is a movie star who rooms with Vanessa while attending NYU.  While this photo doesn’t reveal much, there’s been some apparent rumors of Olivia and Lonely Boy being romantically involved.  We’re keeping our fingers crossed.

And in case you missed it, The CW twittered a first look at Tyra Banks guest starring on Gossip Girl.

Gossip Girl airs each Monday at 9pm on The CW.

Tonight: NBC FTW!

In 2009 Fall Season, 2009 Pilots, 30 Rock, Amy Poehler, Comedy, Community, NBC, Parks and Recreation, SNL Weekend Update Thurs Edition, The Office, Weekend Update on 09/17/2009 at 12:56 pm

For those not up on geek-speak, FTW means ‘For The Win’, as in, it’s gonna freakin’ rule tonight when NBC’s fall 2009 comedy season begins!  We hope you have your DVR’s set for some good laughs and some intelligent comedies.  Let’s break it down:

Amy Poehler Returns To SNL Weekend Update This Fall

Everything kicks off at 8pm with SNL Weekend Update Thursday Edition.  Don’t forget that Amy Poehler will make guest appearances in atleast two of the three upcoming episodes of SNL WUTE.  Not to distract from her scripted series, Parks & Recreation, but Poehler really tends to shine anytime she appears on Weekend Update, in our opinion.

And speaking of Parks & Recreation, Poehler’s pulling double duty in the 8-9pm hour this evening as the sophomo

Sneak Peek: Tonight’s Dark Blue Season Finale

In 2009 Pilots, Dark Blue, Summer Schedule, TNT on 09/16/2009 at 4:22 pm

Dark Blue

While our initial thoughts on TNT’s latest scripted series was a little less than rosy, the show has grown on us throughout this summer season.  Tonight brings season one of Dark Blue to a finale and we’re looking forward to it.  We have a little peek here of an undercover drug buy that doesn’t go quite as planned (do they ever?).  They leave you hanging a bit, but if you’ve seen any of the commercials TNT has been airing this week then you already know the secret and what Carter’s gonna do.  We won’t spoil it just in case you missed those commercials, though.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

The season finale of Dark Blue airs tonight, September 16th, at 10pm on TNT.

Tyra Banks On Gossip Girl

In 2009 Fall Season, Gossip Girl, The CW on 09/16/2009 at 3:53 pm

Gossip Girl

The CW just twittered a first look picture of Tyra Banks guest appearance on Gossip Girl.  Her one time guest appearance takes place on the October 5th episode entitled Dan de Fleurette. She’ll star as Ursula Nyquist, an actress Serena will struggle to “control at the premiere of her latest movie”.  No idea why Serena needs to take care of an actress, but I guess we’ll find out on the 5th!

Gossip Girl airs each Monday night at 9pm on The CW.

Sneak Peek At Grey’s Anatomy Season Premiere

In 2009 Fall Season, ABC, Grey's Anatomy, One Tree Hill, The CW on 09/16/2009 at 3:21 pm

Grey's Anatomy

In preparation of the upcoming fall TV season network heads have been trying out a new approach: teasing people with the first four or five minutes of the upcoming season premiere.  I wanna go on record here and say that I don’t like it.  I didn’t watch when The CW posted the first couple of minutes of this week’s One Tree Hill season premiere and I’m not gonna watch this here five-something minute clip from the sixth season premiere of Grey’s Anatomy.  I prefer to witness it live, in HD, when it airs.  That doesn’t mean we won’t give you the chance to see it, though:

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Grey’s Anatomy returns for it’s sixth season on ABC with a two hour premiere on Thursday September 24th at 9pm.

Preview: TNT’s Men of a Certain Age

In 2009 Pilots, 2009 Winter Season, 2010 Winter Schedule, Men of A Certain Age, TNT on 09/16/2009 at 3:09 pm

When we first heard about TNT’s upcoming series Men of a Certain Age and the well chosen cast, we were pretty excited.  This new promotional trailer, the first look we’ve had a look at, just added to that.  Seems like it’s going to be a funny, good-natured type of show.  We’re really looking forward to this and hoping that someone in the PR world is nice enough to shoot us some episodes when their publicity push begins (hint hint).

Vodpod videos no longer available.

TNT has yet to announce a premiere date for Men of a Certain Age, though, as the above picture states, it should be in December 2009.

The Mentalist Season 1 DVD Giveaway!

In CBS, Contests, The Mentalist, TV on DVD on 09/16/2009 at 1:02 pm

The Mentalist

We here at DVR Life know you’re busy planning out your DVR schedules for this busy month: For TV nerds like ourselves, September can be exciting and scary at the same time!  So many new shows!  So many favorites returning!  So many of last season’s shows coming out on DVD!  If there were a such thing as TV overload (trust us, there’s not), it would come in September.  That’s why we wanted to remind you about the release of The Mentalist: The Complete First Series on Tuesday September 22 (just two days before season 2 starts up on CBS!).

The official take:

A mentalist is a master manipulator of thought and behavior. The mentalist is Patrick Jane (Simon Baker in an acclaimed performance), a celebrity psychic whose wife and child are viciously murdered by an elusive serial killer called Red John. Devastated, Patrick admits his paranormal act is fake, renounces his earlier life and uses his astonishing skills of observation and analysis – talents that made him appear psychically gifted – to bring killers to justice. At crime scenes across California, Patrick now helps an elite team of detectives break their toughest cases. But no matter how many criminals he catches, Patrick never forgets his central goal: Find Red John. And bring him down.

Our take:

Patrick Jane is one of the few people in this world you can call a “know it all” and have it taken as a compliment.  The man can tell you more about yourself after one look than your own mother…and he knows it.  Smarmy?  Over bearing?  Kind of an ass at times?  Absolutely.

The Beautiful Life: TBL Premieres Tonight

In 2009 Fall Season, 2009 Pilots, 7th Heaven, 90210, Dawsons Creek, Felicity, Gilmore Girls, Gossip Girl, Melrose Place, Roswell, The Beautiful Life, The CW on 09/16/2009 at 11:20 am

The Beautiful Life: TBL

While we think the ‘TBL‘ is part of The Beautiful Life: TBL is kinda dumb and we suspect that certain members of the cast would never make it past the first season (assuming there’ll be a second), we’re kinda looking forward to tonight’s premiere of the series.  The CW pulled out the usual stops, nudity included, in promoting the show and even did a pretty good job of keeping Mischa Barton’s meltdown from over-taking the series.  Bravo on that, by the way.

We’ve come to expect nothing less than a staggering level of drama and beautiful people when it comes to The CW’s new scripted series and we’re pretty sure we will not be disapointed  by TBL: TBL (that second TBL is just so unneccesary, right?).  Gone, apparently, are the cutesy days of Gilmore Girls, the high school fun of Roswell, the family friendly 7th Heaven, the angsty era of Felicity and Dawson’s Creek.  No folks, in the late aught’s it’s all about the B-I-T-C-H and the oh snap and the sex appeal.

We’re not complaining…really.  We’re still watching and squealing (silently to ourselves, of course) with joy each time Blair brings a girl to tears.  We’re just a little worried that the bitchy factor may be tipping a little too far, between Gossip Girl, Melrose Place and TBL: TBL.  Oh and 90210.  We don’t watch that one but we assume there’s a bunch of pretty people being nasty to each other on that show, too.

Anyway, here’s a whole bunch of sexy, pretty people being nasty, mean spirited and gorgeous:

Gossip Girl Returns!

In 2009 Fall Season, Firefly, Gilmore Girls, Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill, Sonic Youth, Teen Soaps, The CW on 09/14/2009 at 12:15 pm

Gossip Girl

Hopefully you caught our One Tree Hill roundup earlier.  We’re now moving on to Gossip Girl!  The CW has been slightly stingy when it comes to promotional trailers for the upcoming third season of the show.  Of course, there’s the slew of WTF trailers they posted to their youtube channel, but not a peep since, unless you count behind the scenes trailers.  We don’t really count them, though as…well, we don’t really like behind the scenes stuff too much here at DVR Life.  We tend to feel like they kind of kill the magic in a whole you don’t know wanna know what’s in that hotdog kinda way.  There was a pretty funny Chuck Bass appearance on Jimmy Fallon the other night, though.

Others news surrounding this season of Gossip Girl has been related to guest appearances and casting, mainly.  We learned that, even though she’s now starring in NBC’s upcoming medical drama Mercy, Michelle Trachtenburg will be making an appearance as Blair’s college dorm-mate.  Blair’s reaction to that news will be beyond priceless, I’m sure.  In the realm of brilliant casting, Firefly‘s Gina Torres has been cast for multiple episodes as Vanessa’s mother.

Gina Tores

Outside of character casting, there’s the gay storyline spoiler floating around and, what we’re most excited about: the awesomeness of a Sonic Youth guest appearance!  The band will be playing their song Starpower off their 1986 album Evol.  This should be even better than their short spot on Gilmore Girls a few years back!

And just in case you needed it, here’s the season three up to speed trailer:

Gossip Girl returns for it’s third season tonight, September 14th at 9pm on The CW.

One Tree Hill Returns!

In 2009 Fall Season, BBC America, British TV, Gossip Girl, Lipstick Jungle, Melrose Place, One Tree Hill, Skins, The CW, Vampire Diaries on 09/14/2009 at 11:08 am

One Tree Hill

The drama returns!  Tonight marks the return of The CW’s Monday night power duo featuring long-runner One Tree Hill and pop-culture phenom Gossip Girl. We hope you’re ready for the all drama: We certainly are!  While BBC’s Skins has been keeping our teen drama levels from sinking too low and The CW’s premieres of Melrose Place and The Vampire Diaires last week were helpful, we’re ready for some good old American-style overload.

One Tree Hill

Let’s get started with a quick One Tree Hill roundup:

First, we were super excited to learn that Skills would be returning to Tree Hill for a seventh season despite Antwon Tanner’s legal issues.  There was also a whole bunch of promotional trailers posted to The CW’s official youtube channel, including the first four minutes of season 7 episode 1.  There were also not one or two, but three really short teasers they released early this summer.  Also, despite the Brian Austin Green tease, we’re excited to have Lipstick Jungle‘s Robert Buckley joining the cast and curious as to how long Shantel VanSanten will be sticking around as Haley’s older sis, Quinn.  And just in case you missed anything, here’s the season 7 up to speed trailer:

And here’s One Tree Hill creator Mark Schwahn describing a scene entitled 4:30am (Apparently They Were Traveling Abroad).  On a side note, I like knowing that the creator of a show is still around at the seventh season.  That seems so rare!

One Tree Hill returns for it’s seventh season tonight, September 14th at 8pm on The CW.

Jerry Seinfeld’s The Marriage Ref Casting Trailer

In 2010 Pilots, 2010 Winter Schedule, In Plain Sight, NBC, The Marriage Ref on 09/11/2009 at 4:15 pm

Here’s a rare post for us!  DVR Life rarely writes about tv shows are that are in production, and rarely mention reality television, but here we are.  NBC has put together a little promotional trailer for the casting of a new Jerry Seinfeld created show called The Marriage Ref.  The series, according to the video below, will gather couples to talk about whatever drives them nuts about each other and then pick a winner.  Divorce attorney’s rejoice!
