Occupation Preview

In 2009 Fall Season, 2009 Pilots, BBC America, Boardwalk Empire, British TV, Jekyll, Murphy's Law, Occupation, Passerby, Quite Ugly One Morning, Shameless, This Is England on 10/01/2009 at 1:27 pm

Occupation

Here’s an extended trailer for BBC America’s upcoming series Occupation.  The trailer hints at a dark and emotionally taxing drama.  We’re excited for the return of JamesNesbitt.  His last appearance on BBC America in Jekyll was spectacular, to say the least, and we’ve always held out hope that the network would one day show Murphy’s Law or any of his TV films (Quite Ugly One Morning, Passerby) we’ve heard such great things about.

The official description:

Having participated in the invasion, and helped fly a critically injured child from Basra to a UK hospital, three soldiers find it impossible to slot back into civilian life. Driven by very different motives – each heads back to Basra.  Sergeant Mike Swift (James Nesbitt, Jekyll, Murphy’s Law) returns for the love of an Iraqi doctor, Aliyah (Lubna Azabal). Corporal Danny Peterson (Stephen Graham, Boardwalk Empire, This Is England) returns for money, setting up a private security firm. Lance Corporal Lee Hibbs (Warren Brown, Shameless) returns because he passionately believes in the mission to rebuild the country and help the Iraqi people—and the mission is nowhere near accomplished.  Amid growing sectarian conflict, and a boom time fuelled by billions of dollars from the U.S., their dreams of riches, love and making a difference come to define not just their lives but also the occupation itself.

As months turn into years, their lives move in directions they could have never imagined. Mike’s marriage falls apart as he pursues a love affair with an Iraqi doctor, who is now obliged to work within the country’s new religious framework at the hospital. Hibbs is deeply affected by the murder of his closest Iraqi friend, and begins to psychologically unravel. Mercenary Danny’s blatant exploitation of the situation leads to even more corruption and chaos. Occupation unveils a tale of wasted billions, lost lives, corporate greed, and a war that has left many questions unanswered.

Models & Junkies Get The Ax

In 2009 Fall Season, 2009 Pilots, A&E, Army Wives, Drop Dead Diva, Melrose Place, The Beautiful Life, The Cleaner, The CW, Vampire Diaries on 09/26/2009 at 2:39 pm

The Beautiful Life: TBL

As I mentioned on Thursday, The CW has been having a rough go of it with their new series this season.  Other than Vampire Diaries, none of their new scripted series have been pulling very impressive ratings, including the much ballyhooed Melrose Place remake.  I wasn’t expecting a death so quickly, though, but after only two episodes The Beautiful Life: TBL has been given the ol’ heave-ho.

Other than the swiftness, not much about the cancellation is a surprise.  The first mistake came with the casting of Mischa Barton.  Mistake number two was the bungled PR handling of the show, including the ridiculous nude promotional photos debacle.  On the production side, fault lies with the tepid writing, which was predictable and bland.  We can’t really expect much more, though, from such a dull and overly-used premise (it girl disappears from the spolight, everyone assumes rehab, actually had a baby, surprise!).

There were pops of excitement, but those fleeting moments were mainly visual and were so few and far between.   Watching the show I often wondered why it lasted a full hour.  The network is shoveling episodes of Melrose Place in TBL’s timeslot, which I guess means another free hour for my DVR.

But wait!  There’s more: A&E has declined to renew (read: canceled) their latest new scripted series, The Cleaner.  The show was not exactly a favorite of ours, but many in TV critic circles seemed to enjoy it.  We always thought it was a bit too drab and depressing…only not in a good way.  We did like Benjamin Bratt, though, so we’re kinda bummed for him.

The decision to not renew the series for a third season means, atleast for now, A&E has no scripted series.  Not sure if they have anything in  the pipeline for the future, but the network recently merged with Lifetime, which was bought by NBC and blah blah blah.  Lot’s of business stuff, but we all know that, with Army Wives and Drop Dead Diva, Lifetime has been doing pretty well with scripted series and NBC sister nets like USA and SyFy have been killing it with so many hits the last few seasons to even list.

4 Minute Look At Trauma

In 2009 Fall Season, 2009 Pilots, ER, Gossip Girl, Lie To Me, NBC, Trauma on 09/24/2009 at 1:25 pm

Trauma

We’ve got a great little clip of the Trauma pilot here!  Now, we normally do not watch the extended clips of premiere episodes the networks have been releasing this season.  It’s just too much for us – we prefer to wait until the show is airing and we can watch the entire thing.  Not so with Trauma, though, because the series is competing with a handful of other shows on our DVR for a recording slot, so we thought it would be prudent to watch a couple minutes and see if it’s worth the slot.

After watching this four minute clip, we figure we’ll give it a shot for a few weeks.  At first it starts off like most medical dramas: lot’s of yelling “clear!” and even more pushing of “epi”.  That’s only at first though…From there it’s spins on out into ER territory with a crash-boom-bang, lots of quick camera shots and lots of screaming.

Trauma premiers next Monday, September 28th st 9pm on NBC.

Considering that Trauma runs at the same time as Gossip Girl and Lie To Me, do you think it deserves one of the two slots on our DVR?

Vampire Diaries: Friday Night Bites

In 2009 Fall Season, 2009 Pilots, The CW, Vampire Diaries on 09/24/2009 at 11:23 am

Vampire Diaries

It’s been a rough fall season for The CW so far.  None of their new shows are doing very well in the ratings, which somehow manages to be a bit of a surprise while also being no surprise at all.  Go figure.  The one show they rolled out this year that hasn’t tanked thus far is Vampire Diaries, which is cool by us because we kinda dig the show.

The Vampire Diaries airs each Thurday evening at 8pm on The CW.

Modern Family, Cougar Town & Eastwick

In 2009 Fall Season, 2009 Pilots, ABC, Cougar Town, Desperate Housewives, Eastwick, Friends, Married With Children, Modern Family, Significant Others, The Class on 09/23/2009 at 3:30 pm

Modern FamilyIt’s the first big night of ABC’s 2009 fall season!  The network has dubbed the evening Comedy Wednesdays and they’ve put a HUGE push behind their new comedy Modern Family.  The series kicks off the evening at 9pm and I’m guessing the network hopes that the show will draw some big numbers and, if they’re lucky, keep some of those viewers all the way up to their local newscast.

Modern Family is a brilliant little half-hour sitcom that, surprisingly enough, has managed to break the mold when it comes to half-hour sitcoms.  The series sticks with the ever popular faux-documentary style, but it stands out from the herd because it doesn’t take place in a workplace setting.  In that way the series reminds of us a little known pre-trash Bravo gem called Significant Others.  There’s also no laugh track, a level of wit not normal to sitcoms and an impressive cast, including Ed Harris of Married With Children and Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who was the break out hit of the much-mourned over The Class.

Modern Family

The 9pm hour continues with a new half-hour sitcom starring Courtney Cox, Cougar Town.  We’ve heard good and bad things about the series, but we’re keeping our fingers crossed.  Cox has chosen some really off-beat projects since the ending of Friends, and we’re guessing this will fit into that category.

At 10pm is the premiere of Eastwick, a remake of the movie The Witches Of Eastwick, which was based on a book by John Updike.  The mystical plot of the new series has been modeled to the quriky likes of Desperate Housewives and we’re looking forward to seeing Paul Gross and Lindsay Price.

Modern Family, Cougar Town & Eastwick premiere tonight, Wednesday September 23rd, starting at 9pm.

Tonight: The Good Wife & The Forgotten

In 2009 Fall Season, 2009 Pilots, ABC, CBS, Cold Case, The Forgotten, The Good Wife on 09/22/2009 at 3:55 pm

The Good Wife

We’re pretty excited for tonight!  This evening marks the premiere of The Good Wife on CBS and, we have to admit, we’ve been looking forward to this show for quite some time.  The cast includes some of our favorite actors of all time, the promotional trailers look fantastic and even the artwork (see above) is looking pretty awesome.  Oh, and the concept sounds pretty good, too!

The Good Wife premieres tonight, Tuesday September 22nd at 10pm on CBS.

But wait!  Get your DVR’s ready because there’s also a new series on ABC this evening: The Forgotten.  Or ‘The forgotten‘ as it’s showing up on our Program Guide.  Nobody seems to know much about this series as the pilot was reshot after the lead character was recast with Christian Slater.

From all the trailers we’ve come across, it seems to be a serial in the vein of CBS’ Cold Case about regular folk who help find…well, the forgotten.  Check out some trailers we posted here and here.

The Forgotten premieres this evening, Tuesday September 22nd at 10pm on ABC.

Warehouse 13 Season Finale Tonight!

In 2009 Pilots, 2010 Summer Schedule, Summer Schedule, SyFy, Warehouse 13 on 09/22/2009 at 3:15 pm

Warehouse 13

This was most definitely the summer of cable when it came to original programming.  Networks like USA and SyFy slaughtered their older broadcast siblings in not only ratings, but also quality.  One of the big winners was Warehouse 13.  The new original series was launched by SyFy right around the time that they actually became SyFy, leaving the plainly original SciFi name behind.

Sci Fi geeks everywhere created an uproar over the new name and even the way they went about getting the rights to the name.  Many out there, critics too, claimed Warehouse 13 was just mindless zone-out style entertainment…Then the ratings started rolling out.  W13 was a hit.  A big hit.

We are proud to say that DVR Life was not one of those  that called Warehouse 13 mindless.  We dug the quirky artifacts and love-hate relations from the beginning.  And so here we are now.  The fall season is taking over TV schedules and the first season finale of Warehouse 13 airs tonight.  Don’t worry, though, as the show has already been renewed for a second season to air in summer 2010.  Here’s a quick peek at tonight’s season finale:

Brothers Preview

In 2009 Fall Season, 2009 Pilots, Brothers, Comedy, Fox on 09/18/2009 at 10:55 am

Brothers

Up to this point we have yet to talk about Fox’s upcoming comedy Brothers on DVR Life.  It features CCH Pounder, which would have normally steered us towards it, but the first promotional trailer we said portrayed just a middling attempt at a sitcom.  We’re not saying it was bad; just not worth our time.

Here, though, we’ve come across another trailer which actually gave the show a sweet, family-like glow with a bit of biting humor.  Like a good trailer should, it made us wonder if we should give the show a try after all.  Let us know what you think:

Brothers airs on Friday, September 25th at 8pm with a one hour series premiere on Fox.

18 Minute Clip of Flash Forward

In 2009 Fall Season, 2009 Pilots, ABC, Flash Forward, Grey's Anatomy on 09/17/2009 at 6:27 pm

FlashForward

If you haven’t heard, someone leaked a really poor quality torrent of ABC’s upcoming Flash Forward earlier this week.  The network, trying to drum up some buzz for the series, offered their Inner Circle members a chance to stream the pilot on Sunday evening and some enterprising geek decided to share.  I’ve also heard rumors there’s a Russian overdub out there somewhere, too.

Not sure if this is a calculated move to battle those low quality torrents or not, but ABC has decided to post the first (approximately) 18 minutes of the series premiere.  As we said about the 5 minute Grey’s Anatomy peek ABC doled out yesterday, we’re not interested.  DVR Life will just hold out til the show actually premieres.  It’s exactly one week from tonight and we’re pretty sure we’ll manage to get by.  We’re really starting to miss the good old days when you had no idea what was going to happen until a show finally aired *sigh*.

We  thought some of you might wanna check it out, though, so here ya go:

Flash Forward premieres Thursday, September 24th at 8pm on ABC.

NBC

For those not up on geek-speak, FTW means ‘For The Win’, as in, it’s gonna freakin’ rule tonight when NBC’s fall 2009 comedy season begins!  We hope you have your DVR’s set for some good laughs and some intelligent comedies.  Let’s break it down:

Amy Poehler Returns To SNL Weekend Update This Fall

Everything kicks off at 8pm with SNL Weekend Update Thursday Edition.  Don’t forget that Amy Poehler will make guest appearances in atleast two of the three upcoming episodes of SNL WUTE.  Not to distract from her scripted series, Parks & Recreation, but Poehler really tends to shine anytime she appears on Weekend Update, in our opinion.

And speaking of Parks & Recreation, Poehler’s pulling double duty in the 8-9pm hour this evening as the sophomo

Sneak Peek: Tonight’s Dark Blue Season Finale

In 2009 Pilots, Dark Blue, Summer Schedule, TNT on 09/16/2009 at 4:22 pm

Dark Blue

While our initial thoughts on TNT’s latest scripted series was a little less than rosy, the show has grown on us throughout this summer season.  Tonight brings season one of Dark Blue to a finale and we’re looking forward to it.  We have a little peek here of an undercover drug buy that doesn’t go quite as planned (do they ever?).  They leave you hanging a bit, but if you’ve seen any of the commercials TNT has been airing this week then you already know the secret and what Carter’s gonna do.  We won’t spoil it just in case you missed those commercials, though.

The season finale of Dark Blue airs tonight, September 16th, at 10pm on TNT.

Preview: TNT’s Men of a Certain Age

In 2009 Pilots, 2009 Winter Season, 2010 Winter Schedule, Men of A Certain Age, TNT on 09/16/2009 at 3:09 pm

moacateaser5

When we first heard about TNT’s upcoming series Men of a Certain Age and the well chosen cast, we were pretty excited.  This new promotional trailer, the first look we’ve had a look at, just added to that.  Seems like it’s going to be a funny, good-natured type of show.  We’re really looking forward to this and hoping that someone in the PR world is nice enough to shoot us some episodes when their publicity push begins (hint hint).

TNT has yet to announce a premiere date for Men of a Certain Age, though, as the above picture states, it should be in December 2009.

The Beautiful Life: TBL Premieres Tonight

In 2009 Fall Season, 2009 Pilots, 7th Heaven, 90210, Dawsons Creek, Felicity, Gilmore Girls, Gossip Girl, Melrose Place, Roswell, The Beautiful Life, The CW on 09/16/2009 at 11:20 am

The Beautiful Life: TBL

While we think the ‘TBL‘ is part of The Beautiful Life: TBL is kinda dumb and we suspect that certain members of the cast would never make it past the first season (assuming there’ll be a second), we’re kinda looking forward to tonight’s premiere of the series.  The CW pulled out the usual stops, nudity included, in promoting the show and even did a pretty good job of keeping Mischa Barton’s meltdown from over-taking the series.  Bravo on that, by the way.

We’ve come to expect nothing less than a staggering level of drama and beautiful people when it comes to The CW’s new scripted series and we’re pretty sure we will not be disapointed  by TBL: TBL (that second TBL is just so unneccesary, right?).  Gone, apparently, are the cutesy days of Gilmore Girls, the high school fun of Roswell, the family friendly 7th Heaven, the angsty era of Felicity and Dawson’s Creek.  No folks, in the late aught’s it’s all about the B-I-T-C-H and the oh snap and the sex appeal.

We’re not complaining…really.  We’re still watching and squealing (silently to ourselves, of course) with joy each time Blair brings a girl to tears.  We’re just a little worried that the bitchy factor may be tipping a little too far, between Gossip Girl, Melrose Place and TBL: TBL.  Oh and 90210.  We don’t watch that one but we assume there’s a bunch of pretty people being nasty to each other on that show, too.

Anyway, here’s a whole bunch of sexy, pretty people being nasty, mean spirited and gorgeous:

NBC Gets Medical

In 2009 Fall Season, 2009 Pilots, Mercy, NBC, Trauma on 09/11/2009 at 3:15 pm

Mercy

E.R. was a very successful series for NBC.  At fifteen seasons, the series was the longest-running medical drama to in air primetime, receiving a record 123 Emmy nominations, 22 of which they won.  And that all came to end last season.  NBC must have looked at the situation, said “where do we go from here?”, panicked a little, and then green lit not one, but two new medical dramas.

Here’s some behind the scenes peeks at each.  We must admit that Mercy has a pretty exciting cast.

The Forgotten Trailers

In 2009 Fall Season, 2009 Pilots, ABC, Advertising, Flash Forward, Modern Family, The Forgotten on 09/10/2009 at 9:45 am

The Forgotten

While ABC seems to be throwing most of their pre-fall promotional resources into sci-fi mind-bender Flash Forward and fresh-faced comedy sitcom Modern Family, we’ve been struggling to keep up with some of their other shows such as this one, The Forgotten.  You’d think being Christian Slater’s return to television and being produced by Jerry Bruckheimer would warrant a bit more of a push, but if that’s the way ABC wants to play it, who are we to judge, right?

Actually, while we are looking forward to this show, we must admit that it seems like it would be a better fit over at CBS.  They’re more procedural and missing persons-y than ABC, don’t you think?

You can also see an older preview we posted about here.

The Forgotten premieres Tuesday September 22nd at 10pm on ABC.

The Good Wife Poster

In 2009 Fall Season, 2009 Pilots, CBS, The Good Wife on 09/09/2009 at 4:45 pm

The Good Wife

Slick poster for CBS’ upcoming Juliana Marguiles series The Good Wife.  Buzz is pretty high surrounding this show.  The trailers look great, the cast is excellent: we’re really hoping for something special here.  Our one hold back, though, is that so much has been made about the scandalous beginning of the series that, once that subsides and we’re left a legal show, some people out there may be disappointed.  We’re not saying that’ll happen, but we do see the potential.  We’ll just keep our fingers crossed.

The Good Wife premieres Tuesday September 22nd at 10pm on CBS.

Natalie Morales

Sorry sci-fi geeks, but you lost a hot one!  Many of you fell for Natalie Morales in ABC Family’s kid sister-friendly sci-fi series The Middleman.  Her character was smart, witty and cute as all get out…Here’s hoping the wit and smarts (no question about the beauty, obviously) carries over to USA’s upcoming White Collar.  TV Squad reports she’s been uped to a series regular.  As if a new series featuring Matt Bomer as a slickster con-man and Tim DeKay as an F.B.I. agent plus Willie Garson and Tiffany Thiessen as co-stars wasn’t already awesome enough, right?

Stargate Universe Trailer

Stargate Universe

It’s been out for a bit but Scifiwire.com reminded us yesterday about this pretty intense promotional trailer for Syfy’s upcoming new series Stargate Universe.  The show is the networks third Stargate-related series in the franchise.  To tell you the truth, the trailer is so intense and features such great production values, there were certain times where I almost thought it was for a movie!

Stargate Universe premieres with a 2 hour pilot on Friday October 2nd at 9pm on SyFy.
