Modern Family, Cougar Town & Eastwick

In 2009 Fall Season, 2009 Pilots, ABC, Cougar Town, Desperate Housewives, Eastwick, Friends, Married With Children, Modern Family, Significant Others, The Class on 09/23/2009 at 3:30 pm

Modern FamilyIt’s the first big night of ABC’s 2009 fall season!  The network has dubbed the evening Comedy Wednesdays and they’ve put a HUGE push behind their new comedy Modern Family.  The series kicks off the evening at 9pm and I’m guessing the network hopes that the show will draw some big numbers and, if they’re lucky, keep some of those viewers all the way up to their local newscast.

Modern Family is a brilliant little half-hour sitcom that, surprisingly enough, has managed to break the mold when it comes to half-hour sitcoms.  The series sticks with the ever popular faux-documentary style, but it stands out from the herd because it doesn’t take place in a workplace setting.  In that way the series reminds of us a little known pre-trash Bravo gem called Significant Others.  There’s also no laugh track, a level of wit not normal to sitcoms and an impressive cast, including Ed Harris of Married With Children and Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who was the break out hit of the much-mourned over The Class.

The 9pm hour continues with a new half-hour sitcom starring Courtney Cox, Cougar Town.  We’ve heard good and bad things about the series, but we’re keeping our fingers crossed.  Cox has chosen some really off-beat projects since the ending of Friends, and we’re guessing this will fit into that category.

At 10pm is the premiere of Eastwick, a remake of the movie The Witches Of Eastwick, which was based on a book by John Updike.  The mystical plot of the new series has been modeled to the quriky likes of Desperate Housewives and we’re looking forward to seeing Paul Gross and Lindsay Price.

Modern Family, Cougar Town & Eastwick premiere tonight, Wednesday September 23rd, starting at 9pm.

Eastwick Promotional Trailer

In 2009 Fall Season, 2009 Pilots, ABC, Desperate Housewives, Eastwick, Pushing Daisies, Sex And The City on 09/08/2009 at 3:30 pm

Paul Gross

I don’t like to get down on shows before I’ve seen them, so until this point I have yet to mention anything, really, about ABC’s upcoming Witches of Eastwick remake, Eastwick.  The initial promotional trailers I had seen didn’t exactly “wow” me.  I also heard rumors about the show being reworked, re-shot, re-written, re-whatever, so I kept my fingers crossed.  I’m excited for any show starring Paul Gross and Lindsay Price.  Gross is so great at playing creepy, smarmy dudes and Price was my favorite actor on Lipstick Jungle.

Finally, though, I’ve come across a promotional trailer for Eastwick that made me want to tune in.  I know, I know.  Editing, cutting, snipping, splicing, whatever: they can make any crappy show look good for even a minute.  But I’m keeping my fingers crossed because this show seems like it could be sort of fun in a Desperate Housewives meets Pushing Daises (fantasy-wise, anyway) meets Sex And The City sort of way.  Or something like that.

Eastwick premieres Wednesday September 23rd at 10pm on ABC.

P.S. I feel like I’m gonna be abused by die hard Fullerton fans about that Pushing Daisies reference…I’m just saying…Well, I was having a hard time coming up with a fantasy-based series in the same realm as witches.  If you have any suggestions, leave in a comment!

TV On DVD September

In 2009 Fall Season, 30 Rock, ABC, ABC Family, BBC America, Being Erica, British TV, Brotherhood, Brothers and Sisters, Castle, CBC, Contest, Crash, Criminal Minds, CSI, Daybreak, Desperate Housewives, Doctor Who, Fox, Fringe, Ghost Whisperer, Greek, Grey's Anatomy, Harpers Island, Heroes, Homicide: Life On The Streets, How I Met Your Mother, It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, ITV, Kings, Law and Order SVU, Life On Mars, My Name Is Earl, NBC, Number 1 Ladies Detective Agency, Parks and Recreation, Primeval, Private Practice, Rescue Me, Sanctuary, Sci-Fi, Showtime, Stephen Fry In America, Supernatural, SyFy, Terminator Sarah Connor Chronicles, The Big Bang Theory, The Game, The Mentalist, The Office, The Unit, Top Chef, TV on DVD, Two & a Half Men, Ugly Betty, Worst Week on 08/26/2009 at 5:43 pm

Along with being the biggest month of the year for both series and season premiere’s for TV, September is also one of the biggest months for TV on DVD releases.  Don’t ask us why.  We think it’s kinda stupid to wait until September as, like we’ve already pointed out, the month is crammed with plenty of stuff to watch on TV AND it doesn’t give people much time to catch up before the next season begins, beyond the fact that it’s a wallet-buster.  It’s a massive month of overload, in our book.

But that doesn’t mean we can’t still be excited!  We’re especially looking forward to Fox’s mind-bending first season of Fringe, the fourth season of The CW’s cult-hit Supernatural (on blu-ray to boot!), Canadian sci-fi lite dramedy Being Erica‘s first season and, of course, the third season of NBC’s comedy giant 30 Rock.

In anticipation of the release of Fringe‘s first season on September 8th, they setup a cool website in which you can enter to win a visit to the show’s set in Vancouver, among other things.  Once you enter  you can watch a video about the difficulties of filming the episode The Ghost Network and then play a game which, if you answer correctly, gives you five extra entries into that set visit contest.  And here’s a little hint for our readers: you may wanna brush up on some episodes of ABC Family’s Greek for some help on the game.  Check out the site:

In Coming! What’s On This Weekend

In Breaking Bad, Brothers and Sisters, Desperate Housewives, Grey Gardens, In Plain Sight, In Treatment, Kings, Law and Order: Criminal Intent, Number 1 Ladies Detective Agency, The Tudors on 04/17/2009 at 2:43 am

Most people’s DVR’s will betting quite a rest this weekend. Believe it or not, the only new drama for Friday night is Fox‘s doomed Prison Break. NBC has that new episode of Kings I mentioned Saturday at 8pm and The Best of Amy Poehler should be good for some laughs at 11:30. Sunday sees the return of Law & Order: Criminal Intent and In Plain Sight on USA, Desperate Housewives and Brothers & Sisters return to ABC after a small break and AMC has a new Breaking Bad.

When we last saw Desperate Housewives, Gabrielle was horny, Lynette was overworked but got some revenge, Orson was on the run, Bree refused to give up her company, Dave got found out and Edie was shocked to learn the truth and then shocked again.

Jesse hit the jackpot and Walt‘s money excuse was cut off of Breaking Bad.

Brothers & Sisters left off with Ryan being a jerk, Tommy still on the run, though not aware that Holly has gotten him off the hook. Rebecca and Justin are still on the outs, Sarah has returned to Ojai and Kitty and Robert are having some big marital problems.

And of course, don’t forget the pay cablers: HBO airs Grey Gardens on Saturday. It’s a movie adaptation of the 1975 documentary following the black sheep of the Kennedy family. On Sunday HBO has new In Treatment and Number 1 Ladies Detective Agency while Showtime has new The Tudors.
