Preview: SyFy’s Alice

In 2009 Fall Season, Alice, Battlestar Galactica, Canadian TV, Corner Gas, Crash, Davinci's Inquest, In Treatment, Intelligence, Kingdom Hospital, Men In Trees, Movies, North of 60, Primeval, Robson Arms, Sanctuary, Sci-Fi, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Steven Spielberg's Taken, SyFy on 09/10/2009 at 10:38 am

It’s quite a ways off, but there’s a pretty cool promotional trailer already for SyFy’s upcoming four-hour two-part mini-series Alice.  The production is a reimagining of Lewis Carroll’s twisted yet family friendly Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland.

From the official SyFy press release:

For this re-imagined adaptation, writer/director Nick Willing mines the bizarre ingenuity and twisted logic of Carroll’s work to create a daringly different, boldly colorful and delightfully skewed dreamscape of his own.

The project features a large and impressive cast that, if you’re familiar with the sci-fi genre and/or Canadian TV, you’ll be astounded by.  The lineup consists of stars (not just guest stars, but actuall cast members) of: Primeval, Steven Spielberg’s Taken, Eureka, Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Battlestar Galactica, Crash (the tv series), Kingdom Hospital, Sanctuary, Robson Arms, Corner Gas, Davinci’s Inquest, Intelligence, North of 60, and Men In Trees, among many many others.  To top all that, they’ve also landed Tim Curry and Cathy Bates!  Whew – that’s alot of talent.

According to the network:

“An incredible creative team has been assembled to re-interpret this familiar tale in an imaginative and innovative way,” said Mark Stern, EVP of Original Programming for Syfy. “This exciting new vision is one of the reasons we’ve been able to attract such high-level talent.”

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Alice is set to premiere on SyFy in December of 2009.  We’ll keep updated as it approaches!

And so as not to confuse anyone, SyFy’s Alice is in no way related to the upcoming Tim Burton film starring In Treatment‘s Mia Wasikowska that we reported on some months back.

Supernatural Pics: Mark Pellegrino As Satan

In 2009 Fall Season, Sci-Fi, Supernatural, The CW on 09/09/2009 at 2:55 pm

Mark Pellegrino

DaemonsTV got first look pictures of Mark Pelligrino on the sixth season of The CW’s Supernatural.  We first took notice of Pelligrino when he ruled as Rita’s creepy wife-beating junkie ex on Dexter.  More recently he ruled as the island’s creepy Jacob on Lost.  He’s good at being creepy, so we’re excited to see how he plays the creep himself: Satan.

Mark Pellegrino

The evil one’s guest-stint begins this Thursday during the season premiere, though these pictures are from episode three, entitled “Free To Be You and Me”, which will air September 24th.

Supernatural returns to The CW on Thursday September 10th at 9pm for it’s fifth season.

Stargate Universe Trailer

Stargate Universe

It’s been out for a bit but reminded us yesterday about this pretty intense promotional trailer for Syfy’s upcoming new series Stargate Universe.  The show is the networks third Stargate-related series in the franchise.  To tell you the truth, the trailer is so intense and features such great production values, there were certain times where I almost thought it was for a movie!

Stargate Universe premieres with a 2 hour pilot on Friday October 2nd at 9pm on SyFy.

Warehouse 13 Sneak Peek

In Sci-Fi, Season Finale, Summer Schedule, SyFy, Warehouse 13 on 09/03/2009 at 4:12 pm

Warehouse 13

We’ve got a bit of a sneak peek at next week’s episode of Warehouse 13 on SyFy.  The episode is entitled Breakdown and it looks like the breakdown may be of the warehouse itself!  Really interested to see them trek through the “Dark Vault”, especially when things are going haywire!

If you’ve been missing Warehouse 13, you’re summer was not as great as it could have been!  Don’t fret, though, you have plenty of time to catch up via Hulu before the season 1 finale on September 22nd.  We’re looking forward to season 2 next summer, too.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Warehouse 13 airs each Tuesday at 9pm on SyFy.

Yesterday we gave you a peek at Lost‘s Sonya Walger on Flash Forward and today we have another clip from ABC’s upcoming mind-bender, this one giving us our first look at Lost‘s Dominic Monaghan.

Flash Forward premieres Thursday September 24th at 8pm on ABC.

New Flash Forward Trailer

In 2009 Fall Season, 2009 Pilots, ABC, Flash Forward, Lost, Sci-Fi on 09/02/2009 at 6:15 pm

ABC has released a new, less sci-fi based trailer for the upcoming Flash Forward.  The clip features a woman, Lost‘s Sonya Walger, telling her husband that her flash consisted of her being with another man.  Drama-rama, time, sci-fi kids!  The promo asks “If you could see your future, would you change it?”  Nice way to hook in both sci-fi and drama lovers.

Flash Forward premieres Thursday September 24th at 8pm on ABC.

Along with being the biggest month of the year for both series and season premiere’s for TV, September is also one of the biggest months for TV on DVD releases.  Don’t ask us why.  We think it’s kinda stupid to wait until September as, like we’ve already pointed out, the month is crammed with plenty of stuff to watch on TV AND it doesn’t give people much time to catch up before the next season begins, beyond the fact that it’s a wallet-buster.  It’s a massive month of overload, in our book.

But that doesn’t mean we can’t still be excited!  We’re especially looking forward to Fox’s mind-bending first season of Fringe, the fourth season of The CW’s cult-hit Supernatural (on blu-ray to boot!), Canadian sci-fi lite dramedy Being Erica‘s first season and, of course, the third season of NBC’s comedy giant 30 Rock.

In anticipation of the release of Fringe‘s first season on September 8th, they setup a cool website in which you can enter to win a visit to the show’s set in Vancouver, among other things.  Once you enter  you can watch a video about the difficulties of filming the episode The Ghost Network and then play a game which, if you answer correctly, gives you five extra entries into that set visit contest.  And here’s a little hint for our readers: you may wanna brush up on some episodes of ABC Family’s Greek for some help on the game.  Check out the site:

New Dollhouse posters.  We gotta say, they look nice but they’re not quite as steamy as the first seasons advertising campaign.  That’s not a complaint, just a bit of a surprise.

Stargate Universe Poster

In 2009 Fall Season, 2009 Pilots, Sci-Fi, Stargate, Stargate Universe, SyFy on 08/20/2009 at 1:36 pm

SyFy’s been doing some good this week! Yesterday they announced the renewal of freshman hit Warehouse 13 and just now they released a great looking poster for their upcoming new series, Stargate Universe. The show is a spin off of the hugely successful Stargate franchise (as if the name didn’t tip you off) and this makes for SyFy’s third Stargate-related series.

According to SyFy’s Sci-Fi Wire, the story “follows the adventures of explorers who find themselves trapped on a never-ending mission aboard the Destiny, a ship built by the Ancients, when the crew learns the ship can’t return to Earth.”

Stargate Universe premieres with a 2 hour pilot on Friday October 2nd at 9pm on SyFy.

DVR Life’s Smallville Season 8 DVD Contest!

In 2009 Fall Season, Contests, Sci-Fi, Smallville, The CW, TV on DVD on 08/20/2009 at 1:03 pm

Smallville Season 8

It seems like forever ago that we were introduced to a young farm boy, living with his parents, crushing on his neighbor, struggling to fit in at his small town high school.  Actually, in the world of television, it was nearly forever ago!  It’s a rare feat for any show to make it to season 9.

Things have changed throughout the seasons on The CW’s Smallville.  Clark has grown up and is now a cub-reporter in the big city, many of his teen friends (and enemies!) have gone their own way and his crush has changed, but that doesn’t mean he’s not still the same small town kid with a secret.

New Heroes Poster

In 2009 Fall Season, Californication, Heroes, NBC, Sci-Fi, The Nanny on 08/20/2009 at 12:29 am

Heroes - Redemption

So…I really want to try and stay tactful here with this post.  It’s kinda hard, though, because as I write this in the little box thing-y that I write posts in, I have a massive serving of cleavage just above the words I’m typing.  The box isn’t big enough to fit anything above the neck so I’m just face to face with boobs.  It’s very distracting… I think I’m creeping myself out.

Maybe that’s what NBC was going for?  Creepy old sci-fi dudes?  I just read a news article yesterday that said the average gamer is 35 years old, over weight and depressed.  Are they Heroes‘ target audience?  If so, homerun NBC Universal art department!  Give yourselves a round of applause.

SyFy Renews Warehouse 13

In 2010 Summer Schedule, Battlestar Galactica, Programming, Sci-Fi, SyFy, Warehouse 13 on 08/20/2009 at 12:05 am

Warehouse 13

Variety reported a little while ago that SyFy has picked up playful summer hit Warehouse 13 for a second season.  If you follow @syfy on twitter, it’s probably no big surprise due to their weekly tweet boasting of killer ratings.  Variety remarked that the series has been pulling a near average of 3.7 million viewers each week, which makes it SyFy’s biggest hit thusfar.  There’s even mention of it beating out Battlestar Galactica’s first season.  And 50% of the audience is female.  Imagine that!

I also think it’s kinda interesting that their biggest hit came at the same time as their name and brand change.  Perhaps, despite all the booing and hissing made by sci-fi kids world-wide, those network people actually know what they’re doing.  I wonder if Warehouse 13 would have done so well had it debuted on Sci-Fi and not SyFy?

The second season is set to comprise 13 episodes and air next summer.

Warehouse 13 is in the midst of it’s first season with new episodes airing at 9pm Tuesdays on SyFy.

Pick Your Favorite Summer Show!

In 10 Things I Hate About You, 2009 Pilots, ABC Family, BBC America, Being Human, British TV, Burn Notice, Defying Gravity, Doctor Who, Eureka, favorite shows, HBO, Hung, In Plain Sight, ITV, Make It Or Break It, Nurse Jackie, Programming, Royal Pains, Sci-Fi, Summer Schedule, SyFy, The Listener, The Philanthropist, TNT, Torchwood, True Blood, Uncategorized, USA, Warehouse 13 on 08/12/2009 at 2:23 pm

It’s a been pretty dynamic summer when it comes to television. Both premium and basic cable networks have packed nearly every night of the week with some great, quality programming.

At DVR Life headquarters, it’s be a season rather thick with sci-fi.  The brits have been rocking the genre this year.  We managed to cram the first two seasons of BBC’s Torchwood in just in time to catch Torchwood: Children of Earth, we’re also digging BBC’s latest sci-fi series, Being Human, and caught up with Doctor Who in time for the new movie BBC America treated us to in July and mourned the cliff hanger ending to final season of ITV’s Primeval.  Syfy’s newest scripted offering Warehouse 13, is a quirky fun time and the return of their much beloved Eureka have given us our dose of stateside sci-fi while Defying Gravity is a sci-fi lite multi-national effort between ABC, the brits and Canada’s CTV.

For our teen drama fix, we’ve been turning to ABC Family’s (I know, right? Who would have thought) shows Make It Or Break It, while their new comedy 10 Things I Hate About You has given us a few good laughs.  Looking for action, adventure and smart talk?  USA’s been ruling the ratings with In Plain Sight, Law & Order: Criminal Intent and Burn Notice.  Newbie Royal Pains has been tearing it up on the Nielsen charts, too.

We’ll stop here.  We could keep going on and on – there’s plenty to say about HBO’s new Sunday lineup, as well TNT’s wins and misses.  There’s just way too much great summer fare this year.

Update 08/13/2009 1:11am:

Nurse Jackie, 10 Things I Hate About You & Leverage have each recieved one vote under the ‘other’ category.

P.S.  When voting for ‘other’, please make sure you enter a show title!

New Fringe Poster

In 2009 Fall Season, Fox, Fringe, Preview, Sci-Fi on 07/30/2009 at 2:36 pm

Check em out! Two new posters for the sophomore season of Fox’s sci-fi hit Fringe. Definitely one of DVR Life’s favorite new series last year and another feather in the cap of Mr. Good Sci-Fi, which is a creature we’ve just now created so we can justify all the great sci-fi we’ve been falling in love (Warehouse 13, Torchwood, Being Human, Eureka, etc, etc) with without considering ourselves sci-fi nerds. Did that make any sense?

Fringe returns to Fox Thursday September 17th for it’s second season.

Preview: Heroes Season 4 Promo

In 2009 Fall Season, Heroes, NBC, Sci-Fi on 07/29/2009 at 2:28 pm

Here we go folks: Welcome to a first look at season 4 of Heroes. Most exciting aspect? The addition of Prison Break‘s Robert Knepper as an evil Carnie leader. Probably not worth all the hype it’s getting? Claire’s sapphic college experiences. Glad to see Madeline Zima of Californication and The Nanny as her roommate, though.

We’re hoping people start coming back to Heroes. Yeah, it faltered a bit the last two seasons or so, but those who stuck it out know that it was worth it and, hopefully, this next season the show will turn itself around, even if Bryan Fuller did bail.

SyFy Sets Caprica Premiere

In Battlestar Galactica, Caprica, Comic-Con 2009, Sci-Fi, SyFy on 07/26/2009 at 2:28 pm

SyFy PR must be racking up the overtime this weekend. They’re all over San Diego Comic-Con with street teams, a faux-Cafe Diem and lot’s of swag. They also announced a fourth season of Eureka and the premiere date for Battlestar Galactica-kin Caprica.

If you’re a sci-fi or TV geek, you’ve probably already seen the two hour premiere of Caprica, which has already been released on DVD (way back in April). The full series is set to kick off with a showing of that two hour special on January 22, 2010 at 9pm. The show will then take up it’s predeccessor’s 10pm time slot on Friday evenings.

Maybe now that Battlestar related television is returning, everyone will shut up about SyFy airing “mindless” sci-fi shows. DVR Life does not find Warehouse 13 or Eureka mindless; we find them awesome and fun and get sick of people expecting mock-U.N. meetings out of every series on the network.

Here’s some video clips:

(Take note: The second video is supposed to be the Comic-Con trailer but the embed code on the SyFy player seems to be a bit off. If the second video is the same as the first, click here for the Comic-Con trailer)

Eureka Renewed For A Fourth Season

In Eureka, Sci-Fi, Summer Schedule, SyFy on 07/26/2009 at 1:20 pm

NBC Universal announced on Friday that they’ve picked up Eureka for another 22 episodes for sister cabler SyFy. That’s pretty awesome news in our book. We dig Eureka. It’s no secret as we’ve gushed a time or two in anticipation of this current season’s return.

The quirky sci-fi series is three episodes into the second half of season 3. With the announcement of 22 new episodes, we can only assume that the plan is to split the season in two parts again, therefore guaranteeing atleast two more summers worth of new Eureka.

Preview: ABC’s Defying Gravity

In ABC, Defying Gravity, Grey's Anatomy, Sci-Fi, Summer Schedule on 07/11/2009 at 2:13 pm

We have to admit, this show kind of snuck up on us here at DVR Life. With all the talk of the summer television season in late spring and how cable would be ruling the season we have to admit that we didn’t hear anything about this show until just a week or so ago.

Our ears first perked up at the mention of Ron Livingston. Then we heard it was from the producers of Grey’s Anatomy and also starring Laura Harris of Dead Like Me. All good, if not consistent (Grey’s crew doing sci-fi?), things to hear.

Both clips are rather similar but there’s some different footage in each. The trailers don’t tell you much about the plot, only that there’s zero gravity sex, someone yelling “Zoe!” and Ron Livingston is billed as a hot American hero, so we’ll fill you in:

In the near future an international crew of astronauts (four men, four women: imagine that!) take off on a six year space mission covering the eight billion miles to Venus. The reasons for the mission, though, are being billed as “mysterious”.

The series will be a mix of flashbacks, spot lighting the astronaut’s path to being chosen for the flight, and the present.

Defying Gravity premieres with a two hour episode on August 2nd before taking it’s usual Sunday 10pm time slot.

Welcome Back, Eureka!

In Battlestar Galactica, Eureka, Sci-Fi, Summer Schedule, SyFy on 07/11/2009 at 2:11 pm

DVR Life really wanted to get this up yesterday, you know, before the show came back, but we were having nicotine fits or something. It’s never too late to welcome back an old friend, though.

Things may have shifted a bit on the show, what with Carter not being Sheriff anymore, and even in the real world surrounding the show, with SyFy being the new official name of the Sci…well, what was the Sci-Fi network, but the show is back and quirky as ever.

The series’ easy breezy story lines and grin-inducing verbal patter tends to get a lot of flack in the science fiction world as being mindless or labeled the kind of show you zone out on. We think that’s a load of bull, though.

While the premise and story lines may not lead to mock UN sessions like Battlestar Galactica, the production values are of a decent level and feature some fantastic visual effects, especially for a show of it’s size. It’s also fun and witty and one of the few science fiction shows we could watch with our mothers (and that’s a good thing – we love our moms).

The basic idea is this: not every show needs to explore the greater intricacies of the human condition or blah blah. It’s good to have some sci-fi that elicits a giggle or two, wows us with non-killer robots and oddball experiments gone wrong. We heart Eureka for giving us a laugh, an escape and good science fiction all at the same time.

If you missed the return of of Eureka last night, fear not. Set your DVR’s as the first episode of season 4 is being replayed on SyFy Tuesday at 8pm and then again Friday at 8pm.

The next new episode of Eureka airs on SyFy Friday at 9pm.

Sneek Peek: NBC’s Day One

In 2009 Upfronts, Day One, NBC, Sci-Fi on 07/08/2009 at 12:35 pm

Post-apoc blog Quiet Earth managed to get a hold of the Day One trailer NBC used for upfronts last May.

The trailer, apparently consisting of temporary visual effects and music, was a bit surprising in the fact that the series seems to be more than just the post-apocalyptic tale DVR Life had been expecting. A female character in the trailer seems to have not only been through this already (I just want to save these people from suffering the way we did.”), but has the power to choose who she wants to surround herself with on her second go-round (“I choose each and everyone of you.”. An alien come to save planet earth from what-or-whoever destroyed her planet, perhaps?

Day One is set to premiere sometime after the Winter Olympics in early 2010 on NBC.

Eureka Marathon This Weekend

In Eureka, Sci-Fi, Summer Schedule on 06/15/2009 at 7:24 pm

What could possibly be better than relaxing in a hammock overlooking a beautiful landscape from the wrap around porch of your Victorian-style farmhouse on a sunny Sunday afternoon?

You don’t have a Victorian-style farmhouse? And you live in Florida where it’s so disgustingly humid that you can’t even fathom stepping foot on the 4 foot by 4 foot platform you call a front porch? You don’t even own a hammock?

Well, I guess a second runner up to all that could be watching the Sci-Fi Channel’s Eureka marathon. If, like me, your DVR inexplicably removed Eureka from your Series Manager and it took you nearly 3 weeks to notice due to working graveyard shift, then you’re in luck.

The Sci-Fi Channel chopped Eureka‘s third season in half, deciding to air 8 last year and 8 this year. Cheap, I know, but what are you going to do? New episodes begin airing Friday July 10th with the return episode, “Welcome Back Carter”.

To catch up or review, set your DVR for Sunday. Starting at 9:30am, Sci-Fi will air the first 8 episodes of season 3 back to back. I like that they’re not waiting until the last minute to do this so you have one day between the marathon and the premiere. It gives you a chance to watch them leisurely before starting up with the new episodes.

In ABC, Miniseries, Preview, Sci-Fi, V on 06/02/2009 at 4:19 am

The more I’m hearing and seeing about V, the more excited I am. The show originally ran as a miniseries in 1983 and this remake is being dubbed a “limited run series”. I’m assuming that means it’ll be more than just a four hour movie split into two parts like most miniseries.

The cast is looking rather great, too. From the clips I’ve seen and we can expect Scott Wolf of Party of Five, Smallville‘s Laura Vandervoort, Firefly/Serenity‘s Morena Baccarin, Joel Gretsch who’s had two great sci-fi roles in the past with Steven Spielberg’s Taken miniseries and USA network’s hit The 4400, Lost‘s Elizabeth Mitchell, Alan Tudyk who’s also a Firefly alum, Lourdes Benedicto from 24‘s second season and a host of others.
