Nip/Tuck Season Five Part Two

As the weather cools and leaves turn, harvests are collected and animals prepare for hibernation, we here at DVR Life are locked securely in our living room, curtains drawn tight, remote in hand, just waiting…waiting for the return of Nip/Tuck.  The series has been a consistent mind-blower for five seasons now, though FX’s little trick of stretching 1 season out for a year or two is a bit trying, while tickling us with impressive visual beauty and drama that could be considered so campy, John Waters would be proud.

The official take:

L.A. continues to be the land of plenty for the relocated plastic surgeons of McNamara/Troy. An aspiring rapper wants more booty to shake, so would the docs please put some junk in her trunk? Can would-be vampires have those nasty neck wounds concealed? Can a yoga expert with a giant, uh, appendage have it shortened? Yes to all the above. And maybe everyone, even the docs, should also have a check-up from the neck up.

Season 5 wraps with 8 episodes of envelope-pushing surgery, surprise, silliness and seriousness. Yes, seriousness. Because Christian now battles the Big C. Sean copes with the aftermath of the knife attack. And Liz says “I do” to the last person you’d imagine. Time to stretch your imaginations, fans.

Nip/Tuck Season Five Part Two collects the final 8-episodes of Nip/Tuck‘s 22-episode fifth season.  The collection also includes a special feature entitled Nip/Tuck: The Science of Beauty

Make sure you stop by the official DVD website for more information on the special features, lot’s of videos, photos and goodies like downloadable wallpapers, buddy icons, facebook badges and character bios.

Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles DVD Contest

In Contest, Contests, Firefly, Fox, Invasion, Surface, Terminator Sarah Connor Chronicles, TV on DVD on 09/23/2009 at 4:23 pm

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles

Who would ever have thought that a muscular robot with an inexplicable Austrian accent uttering “I’ll be back” would launch a huge sci-fi franchise?  I never would have though that line, originally scripted “I’ll come back” nearly 30 years ago, would lead to a pretty fantastic television series.  Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, though, has already been added to the much too long list of great sci-fi series to end too soon (Firefly, Invasion, Surface).

Luckily we now live in the days of quick-to-DVD releases, even when a series has been canceled!  Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles The Complete Second Season has just been released as a nifty 6-disc collection, so you shouldn’t let pesky little things like cancellations bother you.

The official take:

The time: today. The stakes: all our tomorrows. A nascent AI, assisted by droids, continues to edge toward world domination and the ruin of humankind. It accepts no limits. It fears no one. Except John Connor. The machines know John, now 16, is the future head of the resistance. They know he is growing in abilities. They must find and terminate him. But Sarah Connor is there, protecting and instructing her son as he becomes the man he?s destined to be. The hunt is on in a season of powerful revelations, breathless pursuits and bravura effects. A mysterious 3-dot symbol (do UFOs provide a clue?), a girlfriend for John (is Cameron jealous?), ZeiraCorp (can it master the renegade software called Turk?) ? Season 2’s 5-disc action arsenal is locked, loaded, ready to amaze.

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles The Complete Second Season collects all 22 episodes of the second season in a 6-disc collection.  Special features include the always funny gag reel, features on creating the shows’ storyboards, commentary of 4 important episodes and The Continuing Chronicles: Terminator, and 8-part featurette gallery, among others.

Make sure you stop by the official DVD website for more information on the special features, lot’s of videos, photos and goodies like downloadable wallpapers, buddy icons, facebook badges and character bios.

The Mentalist Season 1 DVD Giveaway!

In CBS, Contests, The Mentalist, TV on DVD on 09/16/2009 at 1:02 pm

The Mentalist

We here at DVR Life know you’re busy planning out your DVR schedules for this busy month: For TV nerds like ourselves, September can be exciting and scary at the same time!  So many new shows!  So many favorites returning!  So many of last season’s shows coming out on DVD!  If there were a such thing as TV overload (trust us, there’s not), it would come in September.  That’s why we wanted to remind you about the release of The Mentalist: The Complete First Series on Tuesday September 22 (just two days before season 2 starts up on CBS!).

The official take:

A mentalist is a master manipulator of thought and behavior. The mentalist is Patrick Jane (Simon Baker in an acclaimed performance), a celebrity psychic whose wife and child are viciously murdered by an elusive serial killer called Red John. Devastated, Patrick admits his paranormal act is fake, renounces his earlier life and uses his astonishing skills of observation and analysis – talents that made him appear psychically gifted – to bring killers to justice. At crime scenes across California, Patrick now helps an elite team of detectives break their toughest cases. But no matter how many criminals he catches, Patrick never forgets his central goal: Find Red John. And bring him down.

Our take:

Patrick Jane is one of the few people in this world you can call a “know it all” and have it taken as a compliment.  The man can tell you more about yourself after one look than your own mother…and he knows it.  Smarmy?  Over bearing?  Kind of an ass at times?  Absolutely.

Along with being the biggest month of the year for both series and season premiere’s for TV, September is also one of the biggest months for TV on DVD releases.  Don’t ask us why.  We think it’s kinda stupid to wait until September as, like we’ve already pointed out, the month is crammed with plenty of stuff to watch on TV AND it doesn’t give people much time to catch up before the next season begins, beyond the fact that it’s a wallet-buster.  It’s a massive month of overload, in our book.

But that doesn’t mean we can’t still be excited!  We’re especially looking forward to Fox’s mind-bending first season of Fringe, the fourth season of The CW’s cult-hit Supernatural (on blu-ray to boot!), Canadian sci-fi lite dramedy Being Erica‘s first season and, of course, the third season of NBC’s comedy giant 30 Rock.

In anticipation of the release of Fringe‘s first season on September 8th, they setup a cool website in which you can enter to win a visit to the show’s set in Vancouver, among other things.  Once you enter  you can watch a video about the difficulties of filming the episode The Ghost Network and then play a game which, if you answer correctly, gives you five extra entries into that set visit contest.  And here’s a little hint for our readers: you may wanna brush up on some episodes of ABC Family’s Greek for some help on the game.  Check out the site:

DVR Life’s Smallville Season 8 DVD Contest!

In 2009 Fall Season, Contests, Sci-Fi, Smallville, The CW, TV on DVD on 08/20/2009 at 1:03 pm

Smallville Season 8

It seems like forever ago that we were introduced to a young farm boy, living with his parents, crushing on his neighbor, struggling to fit in at his small town high school.  Actually, in the world of television, it was nearly forever ago!  It’s a rare feat for any show to make it to season 9.

Things have changed throughout the seasons on The CW’s Smallville.  Clark has grown up and is now a cub-reporter in the big city, many of his teen friends (and enemies!) have gone their own way and his crush has changed, but that doesn’t mean he’s not still the same small town kid with a secret.
